According to media reports, Vietnam is becoming a leader in the photovoltaic power generation field in Southeast Asia. Data shows that in 2019, the cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaics in Southeast Asia will increase to 12.6 gigawatts, of which Vietnam has 5.5 gigawatts, accounting for 44% of the total regional capacity.

Vietnam has geographical advantages in the development of photovoltaics. The annual sunshine hours in Vietnam reach 1600-2700 hours, with an average light intensity of 4-5 kilowatt hours per cubic meter. This is also a fundamental factor for the Vietnamese government to vigorously develop photovoltaics. The Vietnamese government officially predicts that by 2030, photovoltaic power generation will account for 20% of the country's renewable energy generation.
In recent years, Vietnam has been leading other Southeast Asian countries in the photovoltaic field mainly due to its own subsidy policies. In 2017, the Vietnamese government introduced a photovoltaic subsidy policy, which stipulated a photovoltaic grid electricity price of 93.5 US dollars per megawatt hour and an internal rate of return of about 15%, attracting many investments. In addition, photovoltaic projects in Vietnam also enjoy welfare policies such as corporate income tax, equipment import tariffs, and land use.

At present, the investment level related to the power grid in the entire Southeast Asian region is relatively low, and the demand for electricity will continue to grow in the future. In order to meet the growing demand for electricity, energy investment in Southeast Asia is mainly focused on the power generation field, with investment in power generation projects accounting for more than half of the total energy investment.
Although the cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaics in Southeast Asia is expected to reach 12.6 gigawatts this year, the region is still an emerging photovoltaic market. It is expected that by 2024, the installed photovoltaic capacity in Southeast Asia will reach 35.8 gigawatts, an increase of nearly three times year-on-year. For Vietnam, large-scale photovoltaic power generation projects will dominate the market in the next five years; At the same time, the proportion of distributed photovoltaics will also increase, and it is expected that small photovoltaic projects will account for 32% of the newly added production capacity.
