This layer not only serves as an insulation layer, but also protects the cable from physical damage.
Cables are divided into high-voltage cables and low-voltage cables according to their operating voltage. In high-voltage cables, in addition to the outer rubber sheath, there is also a layer of resin-like filler inside. This layer is a key part of the insulation of high-voltage cables to ensure the safe operation of the cable under high voltage environments. Low-voltage cables do not contain this layer of filler. In addition, some ribbon-like materials are wrapped inside the cable. The main function of these materials is to fix each core of the cable and fill the gaps between the cores.
The role of the cable shield is mainly reflected in the following aspects:
First, due to the large current transmitted by the power cable, a magnetic field is generated around the current. In order to prevent this magnetic field from affecting other electronic components, cable manufacturers usually add a shielding layer to the cable to confine the electromagnetic field inside the cable, thereby reducing electromagnetic interference to the surrounding environment.
Secondly, the shielding layer can also play a role in grounding protection. If the core wire of the cable is damaged, the leaked current can flow through the shielding layer to the grounding grid, thereby protecting the safety of the cable and related equipment.
Finally, for control cables, especially those used in computer systems, the main function of the shielding layer is to shield the influence of external electromagnetic fields. Since the current transmitted by these cables is usually weak and very sensitive to external electromagnetic interference, the presence of the shielding layer is essential to ensure the stable transmission of signals.
