Many people are curious about submarine cables. Submarine cables are actually long-distance optical fibers, and most long-distance optical cables in the world use submarine cables. So, how is the specific laying operation of submarine cables?
Compared to submarine cables, the laying of land cables is much simpler. It only requires digging cable trenches and burying the cables in them. However, submarine cables are not as simple. To lay submarine cables, a submarine cable laying ship is first needed, which puts the submarine cables onto the ship. Then the ship slowly sinks the cables into the seabed according to the prescribed route. Although it may sound easy, practical operation is actually very difficult. Currently, international long-distance submarine cable laying is almost monopolized by developed countries such as the United States, Japan, and Europe. However, in recent years, the domestic cable industry has developed rapidly, and leading companies such as Huawei have the technology and ability to lay submarine cables over long distances.

The laying of submarine optical cables is usually completed by cable burying machines that excavate the seabed, and the working principle is similar to the plow used in farming. During homework, several rows of water spray holes at the bottom of the cable burying machine simultaneously spray high-pressure water columns into the seabed, flushing the seabed sediment to form an optical cable trench. At the same time, the cable guide holes on the upper part of the equipment can guide the optical cable to the bottom of the optical cable trench. The cable laying machine is towed forward by the submarine cable laying ship and transmits various instructions through the working cable laying ship.

In order to avoid damaging the optical cable due to small bending radius or excessive tension, the cable laying ship also needs to use underwater monitors and underwater remote control vehicles to continuously monitor and adjust during laying, control the sailing speed of the laying ship, the release speed of the optical cable to control the angle of the optical cable entering the water, lay tension, and avoid uneven areas and reefs. Of course, there will also be landfill work after the optical cable is laid. In the past, it was common to use ocean currents to naturally cover the trench with sand, saving time for cable laying. However, it was also susceptible to the influence of ocean currents and other unstable factors such as sharks. Therefore, nowadays it is common to use underwater robots equipped with high-pressure water pumps to flush a ditch and then bury it with soil.

The demand for laying submarine cables in the future will increase, and Chinese cable companies will continue to progress and develop. The ability to lay long-distance submarine cables also has certain competitiveness, breaking the monopoly of developed countries in this field. In the future international market, Chinese cable companies will be strong competitors in the submarine cable laying business.
