There are many classifications of cables, and for the convenience of recording and distinguishing, English letter combinations are specially used to represent cables with different functions and materials. For example, power cables produced by Shenghua Cable include YJV, YJV22, YJLV, and other types. So what do these letters each represent?
Insulating material | Conductor material | Inside sheath | Features | Outside sheath |
V-PVC (polyvinyl chloride) X-rubber XD-Butyl rubber Y-PE(polyethylene) YJ-XLPVC(Cross-linked polyvinyl chloride) Z-paper | L-aluminum core (copper will not show) | H- Rubber sleeve HF- Non-flammable rubber sleeve L-AL sheath Q-lead sheath V- polyvinyl chloride sheath Y- polyethylene sheath | CY- oil fill D-oil free F-phase device G-hig voltage P-oil free, dry insulation P-shielding Z-direct current | 0-relevant bare outside sheath 1-primary anti-corrosion outer protection layer 2-secondary anti-corrosion,steel tape armoured copper tape strength layer(for oil fill cable) 3-single layer thin steel wire armoured 4-double layers thin steel wire armoured 5-single layer thick steel wire armoured 6-double layers thick steel wire armoured 29-double layers steel tape armoured with PVC sheath 39-thin steel wire armoured with PVC sheath 59-thick steel wire armoured with PVC sheath |

Let's briefly introduce their specific meanings below
The first group is composed of one or two letters, representing the category of wires. For example, A represents installation wire, R represents flexible wire, ZR - flame-retardant, NH - fire-resistant, and many others
The second group consists of a letter representing the material of the conductor, commonly T represents copper core, L represents filter element
The third group is composed of one letter, representing insulation materials, such as X representing rubber and Y representing polyethylene
The fourth group consists of a letter representing the inner sheath, for example, Q represents lead wrapped and L represents aluminum wrapped
The fifth group is composed of a letter, representing the external characteristics of the cable, such as R for softness and c for heavy-duty
The sixth group consists of a number representing the structure of the armor layer, displayed in the form of small corner markers. Mark 2 represents the double steel strip, and mark 4 represents the coarse round steel wire
The seventh group is composed of a number representing the outer sheath, displayed in the form of a small corner marker. The marker 0 indicates no sheath, and the marker 1 indicates the fiber layer
Based on the code comparison table above, we will take two similar cables as examples, yjy and yjv,
YJY - Crosslinked polyethylene insulated polyethylene sheathed power cable
YJV - Crosslinked polyethylene insulated polyvinyl chloride sheathed power cable
From the code name, it can be seen that the difference between yjy and yjv cables is that the sheath material is different.

The meaning of the code name for yjv cables produced by Shenghua Cable can be explained in detail as follows: YJ represents cross-linked polyethylene insulation, V represents polyvinyl chloride sheath, and the full name of YJV cable is cross-linked polyethylene insulation polyvinyl chloride sheath power cable. YJV cables are generally used as backbone cables.
This type of cable has a wide range of uses due to its good flame retardancy. However, it also has a drawback, which is that it produces a large amount of toxic gases after combustion. Therefore, in public places such as subways and shopping malls, more YJY cables are used. This type of cable uses safer and better polyethylene materials, which do not contain toxic gases. And yjv is also more popular in some special places due to its lower price and better flame retardant performance.
