Two more ultra-high voltage lines are expected to be approved domestically within this year

On September 3, 2018, the National Energy Administration issued a notice on accelerating the planning and construction of a number of key transmission and transformation projects (Guonengfa Power [2018] No. 70), proposing to approve 12 ultra-high voltage transmission lines from the fourth quarter of 2018 to the end of 2019.

But before the publication of this article, only 5 ultra-high voltage lines had been approved.

This includes the Qinghai Henan ± 800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current transmission project (approved in October 2018), the Zhumadian Nanyang 1000 kV AC ultra-high voltage transmission and transformation project (approved in November 2018), the Zhangbei Xiong'an 1000 kV ultra-high voltage AC transmission and transformation project (approved in November 2018), the Shaanxi Hubei ± 800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current transmission project (approved in January 2019), and the Yazhong Jiangxi ± 800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current transmission project (approved in August 2019).

So currently, the actual construction progress of ultra-high voltage in China is much lower than expected. However, according to relevant departments, the Nanyang Jingmen Changsha 1000 kV ultra-high voltage AC transmission and transformation project, as well as the Baihetan Jiangsu ± 800 kV ultra-high voltage DC transmission project, which are also included in the planning and construction list, are expected to be approved within this year.

From the country's new energy strategy, I can see that the government hopes to accelerate the construction of coal transportation and power transmission, while also developing renewable new energy such as wind power, optoelectronics, and tidal power.

Therefore, by the end of this year, the remaining unapproved lines are likely to experience an increase in speed. In addition to the two lines that have already met the approval criteria, there are likely to be other lines that are also expected to be approved this year.
